Welcome to Habitat for Humanity, Washington County Apostles Build Project – 2010

Since 1994 Habitat for Humanity of Washington County has partnered with churches, businesses, organizations and individuals. Since hundreds of families in our community are still in need of decent, affordable housing, our work continues.

What is an Apostles Build?

This type of build is a partnership that allows twelve individual churches (or church partners) to join together to fully fund and build a house for a local family. As Jesus’ original apostles were charged with spreading the word about Jesus, our twelve apostles are charged with assisting in Habitat’s mission to provide decent shelter for God’s children.

How Will it Work?

Each “apostle” will be responsible for 1/12 of the cost of the home ($5,500). Each “apostle” provides at least one person to serve as liaison on the project Steering Team. It is the strength of the steering team that keeps communication open and the project moving forward.
Each “apostle” promotes the build within their congregation via bulletins, displays, fundraising, etc. Each “apostle” encourages members to attend ceremonies held at the worksite. (Groundbreaking, blessing, and dedication of the home.)

Each “apostle” secures volunteers to serve on work days by helping to provide lunches and work teams. Skilled and unskilled workers are welcome!
Each “apostle” continues to emphasize the importance of prayer for the duration of our project.

What Will Habitat Provide?

Habitat provides the building site, house plan, and a carefully screened partner family to work along side you, who will buy the home. The Construction Manager will order all materials, have them on site, and will schedule all sub-contractors and inspections. We will provide construction expertise and leadership to support the leadership that emerges from the partner apostles.

How Do I Become an Apostle?

Approach the persons or groups within your congregation who have a heart for mission and outreach. Inform them of this unique opportunity to be involved on a specific Habitat Build, in partnership with at least 11 other churches, in order to share the project of providing a home for a resident of Washington County. You may decide to ask another congregation to work together with you as one of the apostle partners. This further helps you share the $5,500 cost and the excitement of Habitat ministry.

To line up a presentation or have questions answered in more detail, call the Habitat Office at 301-791-9009. Indicate you wish to speak to someone regarding the Apostles Build. A member of the Habitat Faith in Action Committee will contact you.
